Tips on saving games

Answer

Within ChessBase 14 the procedure for Save and Replace existing game notations has been changed and adapted to existing Windows standards.

In previous versions of the program there was the command “Replace game”. This overwrote with the altered version within the database a game notation which was there in the board window and which had been altered (e.g. by the insertion of variations and comments). The command “Save game” led to the relevant game always being added to the end of the database.

With other applications, e.g. word processing or graphics applications, it is standard for the altered version to be saved at the same place. Therefore the extended is no longer replaced but saved. If one wants to save the altered game notation as a quite new version, that is done via “Save as”.

This is precisely the procedure which is now employed in ChessBase 14. So if you wish to add fresh commentary (e.g. a diagram) to an existing game notation and save it at the same place within the database, you should choose the command “Save”.

Moreover, that can be done more quickly than via the database menu with the key combination CTRL-S. This procedure equates to the Replace in earlier versions of the program. Both with mouse-over and in the title line of the save dialog box you are directed to the “Replace” function and the relevant target database.

If you choose in the database menu “Save game as”, the game notation can be saved into any database you select.

At this point CB 14 offers a further improvement over previous versions of the program. A dialog box appears with recently used databases and you can choose any one of them into which to save directly.

Should the desired database not appear in the list, a click on the entry “Other” gets you there. This starts the Windows database selection dialog and you can use it to navigate to the relevant folder and database into which the game is to be saved.

The database dialog box offers the heading “Pinned”.

Using it you can permanently “pin” those databases which are important for your everyday work. This means that these databases are always available for the saving of games.

A right click on the entry for a database will pin it. The next thing to appear is Properties with the following dialog box:

The selected favourite databases will now be displayed in the list with “Yes” next to them.

This procedure allows you to rapidly save games into the desired database without tiresome detours via the Windows dialog box.
